I am one happy cowgirl. My recent desert equine photo session with Melanie Elise Photography completely captured the immense love I feel for my horse and the passion I have for the Western lifestyle. Now comes the tough part ... choosing which photograph to use for my author biography page in the upcoming sequel to my book for horse lovers, In The Reins.
Readers - Would you help me choose?
You've found the perfect equestrian photographer and you've booked a photo session for you and your horse! You are excited (finally you'll have those perfect pictures of your partnership!) and terrified (Oh no! What if they don't turn out well?) so what do you do? Don't worry! In this post, I'll share tips and tactics for you and your horse as you prepare for your own equine photo shoot!
In this eighth spotlight edition, I talk with fellow equestrian fiction author Laura Wolfe. We discuss the best topics on earth ... writing, books and horses! I just know riders and writers alike will love the message behind her favorite motivational quote. Are you thinking about publishing your own piece of equestrian fiction? You'll glean insight from Laura as she shares the advice she'd give herself if she could go back in time before publishing her first book. I love that she jots her ideas on napkins! I do that too ... smile. Happy reading!
Happy New Year! I couldn't think of a better way to ring in 2017 than by partnering with the Arizona Paint Horse Club for their Copper Country Paint-O-Rama Horse Show at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona. I donated signed books as an Arizona Equine Author (and Paint Horse lover) for giveaway in the western riding classes and I made an appearance to chat with and sign copies of the EQUUS Film Festival award winner for Best Western Fiction and Amazon Equestrian Bestseller, In The Reins, right at the show! It was so much fun. I made a little video recap of this New Year's Day book signing during the horse show. Happy Viewing!
My spurs are still jingling from my escapades at the fourth annual EQUUS Film Festival in New York City! Over the course of four days, I appeared on a panel and in the Pop-Up Gallery where I conducted book signings along with other literary peeps! So here's a little recap of my Top 5 favorite moments (in no particular order because they were all AMAZING) from the EQUUS FIlm Festival in NYC!
Ho, ho, ho! Is there any better way to celebrate the holiday season than by watching some hilarious (and sweet) holiday horse commercials? I think not! So here's 6 of my favorites. I hope YULE love them too! Happy viewing and Merry Christmas from Carly Kade Creative!
In this seventh spotlight edition, I talk with fellow equestrian author Ellen Feld. We discuss the best topics on earth ... writing, books and horses! I am honored to feature Ellen as a part of this series because she has written TEN horse books AND Breyer made a model of one of her horse book characters ... OMG! I think fellow authors will appreciate her response to how she structures her writing schedule! Hint: It's very unstructured! A lot of you may be saying, "Phew! I thought I was the only one." I think I can hear the sighs of relief out there! Happy reading!
One year ago this month, In The Reins was born! I send my gratitude to readers for this amazing first year! Thank you so much for the love and support you've shown In The Reins - my labor of love, my learning curve. Firsts are always so special and strange ... both at the same time. Thank you for being so gracious with this first of mine.

The journey I've been on with my book reminds me of the Rumi quote, "Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray." This November has been one to remember and a testament to the pull of my love for horses and creative writing. That love ... that pull has not led me astray. I am one lucky author cowgirl. I feel so blessed by those who have supported me and the readers who have enjoyed In The Reins. By doing all things with love, I've been gifted these seven slices of author heaven in November ...

When I learned that In The Reins had broken into the Amazon top 100 (then the top 25 then the top 15), my heart grew a thousand times its size because I knew it meant that my writing was resonating with YOU!
You are the audience I wanted to identify with and write for! You know who you are ... you're the bookworms, the horse lovers, the cowgirls, the connoisseurs of cute cowboys! I couldn’t have done it without YOU.
So this Thanksgiving, I've put together a video celebrating YOU - the readers! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am so grateful for your readership. This video is for YOU! It features photos and comments that all the spur jingling readers have shared with me since In The Reins was born last December.
In The Reins wins the EQUUS Film Festival Best Western Fiction Award! Can you believe it? I think my spurs are going to be jingling for days so I made a little tribute video to my spur jingling journey in NYC. I invite you to go behind the scenes of the EQUUS Film Festival with me. My cowboy helped me shoot footage as I attended the four day equestrian extravaganza! We filmed it all - beginning with the VIP Gala & culminating at the equine equivalent of the Oscars called the Winnie Awards. Happy Viewing!
Horse books make my spurs jingle! Before I am a writer, I am a reader. I owe my favorite authors a great deal. They make me feel. My favorite authors speak to a place that engages me and fills me up no matter where I am in life, happy, sad, mad, overwhelmed, they write to the place that heals me when I am cuddled up and lost in a good book! So in order to give back (or pay it forward), I’ve decided to host an equestrian author spotlight series on my blog!
In this sixth spotlight edition, I talk with fellow equestrian author Sharon Kay Roberts! We talk about the best topics on earth ... writing, books and horses! You'll love Sharon's favorite horsey memory! Enjoy the read. It's a fun ride!
The EQUUS Film Festival is right around the corner!
My spurs are so jingling! I'm thrilled to share that I will be attending the fourth annual EQUUS Film Festival in New York City! I can't wait to meet readers, fellow equestrian authors, filmmakers and all the horse enthusiasts that will be attending this awesome horsey event! Over the course of four days, I'll be appearing on a panel and in the Pop-Up Gallery where I'll be conducting book signings along with other literary peeps! Many books featured at the festival have gone on to become movies! Wouldn't that be dreamy? So here's where you can find me in NYC!
In the new series as a contributor for Horse Nation, I talked with Christy Snyder Kelly, head horse trainer at Hold Your Horses Inc., an organization that has been in the business of training AQHA, APHA, and NSBA horses for three generations. Through the interviews and video sessions in this series western horseback riding enthusiasts can glean insights from someone who has been coaching and training champions for years. Read more to learn about this five part series produced with fans of breed horse shows in mind!
Horse movies make my spurs jingle so in celebration of the EQUUS Film Festival (which I'll be attending in a few weeks) I put together a list of my favorite horse documentaries on my blog and included their movie trailers. These are horse movies that I'll watch on DVD or Netflix when I am seeking a little equine inspiration! Enjoy my guide to some great horse documentaries.
I was bouncing in my boots when I learned that my hubby was gifting me a mystery cowgirl getaway in honor of my recent big birthday. It was the perfect getaway for my cowgirl soul! In this blog post, I wanted to countdown my top 5 favorite spur jingling moments from the amazing trip!
In this fifth spotlight edition, I talk with fellow equestrian author Christine Meunier. It's a small world! I learned about the cool things Christine is up to through my work with Beth Jones of Galloping Graphics. Beth had been featured on Christine's Equus Education Blog in the "Profile On" Series. The series interviews people with horsey careers and provides insights for people who want to work with horses!
Do you want a career involving horses?
Christine's site is an excellent resource designed to aid others in developing an equine career. She showcases horse-related careers, horse courses offered around the world (sometimes at no cost) and profiles of those working at making a living related to horses.
Ready to gallop right into the interview and learn more about Christine's work?
I am! Let's giddy up then ...
Seth Godin once said, "The book that will most change your life is the book that you write." Boy, was he right about that! In The Reins has completely changed my life and given me joy beyond my wildest dreams! Most of all, writing gives me the satisfaction that I am doing something for me (and giving something to others) through my creativity. I am so excited to share my first public speaking engagements as a published author!
I was bouncing in my boots when I learned that my hubby was gifting me a mystery cowgirl kind of getaway in honor of my recent big birthday. I didn’t have a clue what he was up to so I invited my Instagram followers to join us on what I was certain would be a spur jingling journey. They learned where we were going and what we were doing at the same time as I did! It was such a fun adventure and the instagrammers that followed along enjoyed it so much that I wanted to capture the fun for followers of my blog too. It was the perfect getaway for my cowgirl soul!
I LOVE writing in-flight! I make the most of airplane tray tables and the times when I am trapped in the air. These are the times when I can maintain uninterrupted focus for several hours. Give me earphones, my Mac, a little elbow room (maybe a plastic cup of wine) and you’ll get thousands of words!
I recently had the most spur jingling Southwest Airlines flight ever!! I made some new flight attendant friends who became In The Reins fans during our time together in the sky.
It all started with my panic over finding a seat. Even though I had checked in right on time, I still came up with a boarding spot (waaaay back!) in the second tier to board the plane a.k.a. the B group. My heart was racing not only at the fear that I wouldn't be able to find a spot for my carry on but the fact that I might not find an aisle seat. Aisle seats are where I do my best in-flight writing. Then fate stepped in ...
I am happy to report that the results of the Galloping Graphics BIG Reveal are in! I want to send a big thank you to everyone who participated in my poll. You helped me decide what items to make and which graphics to use! You are looking at YOUR winning graphics!
Receiving the most votes to earn the position of favorite swag item was the T-shirt! Runner up items included bookmarks, stickers and pens so I decided to make some of those too! My spurs are totally jingling over these goodies! Are you ready to find out who won the very first swag items ever made with the winning graphics?
Drumroll Please! The Winner of the Swag Prize is ...
In this fourth spotlight edition, I talk with author Sydney Scrogham about writing (you'll love her response to being self-published vs. being traditionally published) and equestrian life! I met Sydney through social media. Her Twitter feed is filled with wonderful insights for authors.
One day a tweet of hers was particularly interesting to me so I retweeted her words of wisdom. That single RT caused two authors to unite because moments later I received an invitation from Sydney to join her over on Facebook too. Of course, I accepted the invitation! From there, I learned she was a fellow equestrian with a lovely horse named Snowdy. I was hooked (and learning a lot from her posts) so I read and reviewed her book, Chase. When I launched the Equestrian Author Spotlight on my blog, Sydney reached out. That's how history is made!
So saddle up and get ready for a great ride with author Sydney Scrogham because she writes her horse books in the fantasy world Agalrae where the horse-like Alicorns live!
As the long Labor Day weekend approaches, I am taking a moment to celebrate the outcomes of my self-published labor of love! Reflecting back, it has been such an amazing summer for In The Reins. I wanted to share some of the spectacular highlights of my author journey all in one place.
It isn't always easy being a self-published author with a sequel in the works! There's a lot of heavy lifting involved in getting a dream underway. I am responsible for running my own business and that includes so many different facets from time management (that's right actually finding the time to write!) to deadlines to running promotions to generating publicity to website development to creating marketing materials to attending events to running social media channels to writing a blog and so much more.
Sometimes my head feels like it might actually spin!
In addition to all that goes along with owning my own business, I have a "real" job, a patient spouse waiting to spend time with me, two dogs and a horse always looking for my love. I do what it takes to fit in my much needed barn time. In the saddle is where I get to finally hit refresh and have some me moments (although it feels as if it is never for as long as I'd like). Somehow though, I always make everything work and feel so fortunate to be able to have the life that I do. I am really proud of the creative life I'm inventing for myself too!
There has been a very real magic coursing through all the people that have come together around my book. I am overflowing with gratitude for all the passionate people (especially the readers) who have come on this journey with me.
So in no particular order (because they were all incredibly awesome!) I'm listing my favorite moments ...
Carly Kade writes for anyone who loves horses, handsome cowboys and a great romance. Creative writing makes her spurs jingle!
