The sequel to In the Reins is almost ready for release, so I'm updating readers on the characters. Here's the third video in my "Meet the Characters from Cowboy Away" series on my YouTube channel. This video is titled, "Meet Devon Brooke Then & Now." In this post, I address some frequently asked questions about Devon's character, too. Enjoy!

How are you and Devon similar?

I think one similarity between the leading lady of In The Reins and me is our unabashed love for horses. There’s no place I’d rather be than spending time with my horse. Just like Devon, I’m happiest when I am in the saddle.

How are you and Devon different?

As I wrote Devon’s story, a big difference between us unfolded as her character became far more risky in the saddle (and in love) than I think myself to be. Like it says in Devon’s intro video from my “Meet the Characters” series, she is a little bit of a trainwreck. Devon talks to herself in her mind a lot. I try to go about my day as clear-minded and present as possible. It isn’t always easy, but thanks to meditation I definitely have a quieter mind than Devon does!

What can you relate to most with Devon?

I can relate to all the things that make up Devon Brooke (the good and the bad) because those things are inherently female. Devon Brooke represents all the mixed emotions that make up a woman; strength, independence, uncertainty, desire to find love, and that little bit of neurosis I think a woman can harbor when her fantasies don’t exactly match up with reality. Devon’s judgment certainly becomes impaired over a cute guy in cowboy boots!

A Note on the Cowboy Away Book Cover

You probably noticed that the woman on the Cowboy Away cover looks more mature than the woman on the cover of In the Reins. This is intentional and symbolic of the story line. There is a lot of growth and maturing that occurs in the pages of Cowboy Away for both Devon and McKennon.

Songs Inspiring Wannabe Cowgirl Devon Brooke

Everything is better when music is involved! I love to listen to music when I write ... all kinds of music ... what I listen to depends on my mood. Some days it's classical, sometimes it’s a movie soundtrack, other days it’s jazz or classic rock, and a lot of the time it was country when I was writing In The Reins.

From ‘Cowboy Take Me Away’ by The Dixie Chicks to ‘Gone Country’ by Alan Jackson, I repeated these cowgirl songs over and over while working on Cowboy Away.

The sixty-something tunes I’ve compiled in my "Devon's Songs for the Cowboy Crushin' Cowgirl in Us" playlist on my YouTube channel certainly made my spurs jingle and helped fuel my imagination as I developed the next phase of McKennon and Devon's story.
