Krystal Kelly Podcast Interview Excerpt
Carly: Your love of horses has led you to some amazing equestrian adventures. You've traveled to more than 60 countries. Tell us why you decided to become a world traveler.
Krystal: My dad was in the military so as a kid I did move a lot. I think for me it wasn't unnatural to be a little bit nomadic. I always wanted to be a show jumper and the obvious place to go as a show jumper is Europe. Go to Germany, the Netherlands, or Belgium or something, so from a young age, I definitely always had this dream of traveling internationally and really pursuing my passion in the sport. I've always been very curious and I didn't feel like I fit in the small town that I grew up in in California, so I figured I'd go and find out where I fit in.
Carly: You've worked with horses in 20 countries on six different continents. Tell us about how you married your adventures overseas with being with horses, too.
Krystal: I didn't actually know that it was possible to work internationally with horses. I just sort of had it in my brain, so I decided to figure out how to make it work. I did find work through the Internet. The more I started traveling it became more word of mouth or I met someone who knew of some jobs. I actually got a job in Romania by accident. I sort of showed up in the country because I had met a Romanian woman in my first job in Belgium. Every job I found sort of led to one thing to another. It's kind of funny. The Universe works in crazy ways.
Carly: All of the travels and your adventures have led to a business. Talk to listeners about Equestrian Adventuresses.
Krystal: When I started traveling I was doing it all solo. I was all alone. I wanted to share my experiences with a community of other women because in America it's mostly women who are riding. I was missing that community, so I started Equestrian Adventuresses. We have a YouTube show. We have a podcast. We have so many articles on the website where we share a lot of stories, interviews, and women's personal adventures. They're like super cool amazing women and they just have so many awesome stories, which is how sort of the book idea came into manifestation. It's basically a tribe for women where they can come and connect with each other and share their adventures, get resources, tips and information about traveling with horses around the world.
Carly: You've written the Equestrian Adventuresses series and the Travel Guide Books for Equestrians series. Tell us about your horse books.
Krystal: We have three books so far in the Equestrian Adventuresses series and actually the intention is to release a new book every month. Basically I post submission calls for people to submit their travel stories. The book series is true stories about women overcoming obstacles or challenges on the trail and it is a very international group. Every single chapter in the book is completely unique. They are all true stories of women taking on the world from the back of a horse.
Krystal: The Travel Guides for Equestrians series came from a lot of women asking for resources. We do have the the USA Travel Guide and then we have the job book with actual job listings, but it also talks about how to get jobs internationally and then it lists a whole bunch of job ideas that you can do if you just have no clue what you want to do.
Also, we have the Horse Riding in Every Country guide, which is kind of like a phone book. It lists horse riding stables in 180 different countries, so you can actually flip through and find places to ride if you feel like riding in Ireland or Iraq or wherever. The last one is basically the World Travel Guide. It is the book where you get in-depth information like safety tips, where to go, what to do, and then of course, where to ride because that's what we really want to know.
Carly: What advice would you offer to someone interested in traveling on horseback in a new country for the very first time?
Krystal: First of all, I would recommend downloading the Travel Guide Books for Equestrians and definitely be visit Equestrian Adventuresses. Take advantage of the resources there. We have books, videos, articles, and women who you can actually speak to. There's almost no country that you can think of that you couldn't find someone and ask if they have been there or what it's like. Personally, I would tell someone to just book the ticket. Just do it and I think they'll be pleasantly surprised. The only bad thing is you will then be addicted. You'll want to do it again and again and again, so there's that.
