Saddle Up for These Great Horse Documentaries

11/3/2016

A Guide to Great Horse Documentaries
Horse movies make my spurs jingle so in celebration of the EQUUS Film Festival (which I'll be attending in a few weeks) I put together a list of my favorite horse documentaries on my blog and included their movie trailers. These are horse movies that I'll watch on DVD or Netflix when I am seeking a little equine inspiration! Enjoy my guide to some great horse documentaries.

1. Buck

"The horse is a great equalizer, he doesn't care how good looking you are, or how rich you are or how powerful you are -- he takes you for how you make him feel." - Buck Brannaman

While Buck Brannaman is incredibly quotable, the above are his words of wisdom that touch me most. BUCK is a must see and follows the story of Buck Brannaman, a real life horse whisperer. The film chronicles his abusive childhood to his successful approach to horses by teaching people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment.

2. Wild Horse Wild Ride

This movie is a spur jingler for sure! Wild Horse Wild Ride takes you through the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge. You'll be on the edge of your seat ...err saddle ... as 100 people across the country attempt to tame a wild mustang in 100 days.

3. Unbranded

Another film from the producers of Buck, Unbranded is a documentary that follows the 3,000-mile journey of four friends who ride on horseback from Mexico to Canada hoping to inspire the adoption of mustangs and burros in holding facilities across the United States. Unbranded, both the film and its accompanying book, are official EQUUS Film Festival selections (just like my book, In The Reins) and I hope to have the chance to meet the cowboys who made this unbelievable trek on once wild mustangs while I am in New York City this month!

4. Dark Horse

Dark Horse tells the tale of a group of friends who decide to breed a racehorse and the inspiring events that follow. Gallop over to Netflix to watch their foal grow into an unlikely champion that beats the finest thoroughbreds in the land. This is a flick for anyone with BIG DREAMS!

5. The Horse Boy

I highly recommend this book which I read before I saw the documentary! The Horse Boy follows the journey of a Texas couple as they trek on horseback through Outer Mongolia in an attempt to find healing for their autistic son. This is an inspiring journey of human-horse connection.

So there you have it! My top 5 favorite horse documentaries. Want more great horse movies? Check out more of my favorite horse movie trailers on my YouTube channel in my "Best Horse Movies" playlist. I've got everything in that playlist from Flicka to Phar Lap to The Black Stallion to The Man from Snow River so if you are in need of a good horse movie you're sure to find one that jingles your spurs in there. Happy viewing!
EQUUS Film Festival 2016

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, my novel is an official EQUUS Film Festival 2016 Literary Selection. My spurs are jingling thinking about being in NYC to meet and greet, sell books & conduct book signings! I can't wait for readers to visit me in the Pop-Up Gallery.

The EQUUS Film Festival is the world’s premier showcase for domestic and International equestrian content feature films, documentaries, music videos, commercials, art & literature. Many books featured at the festival have gone on to become movies! Wouldn't that be dreamy?

Stay tuned for my adventures in NYC. I'll be sharing videos while appearing in the Literary Corner to meet and greet, sell books and conduct book signings at the EQUUS Film Festival in New York City this November!

Here's My EQUUS Film Festival Promo Video Reel

This short video chronicles my journey (through pictures) with In The Reins since its release at the end of last year.

Seth Godin once said, "The book that will most change your life is the book that you write." Boy, was he right about that!

Writing In The Reins has completely changed my life and given me joy beyond my wildest dreams! Most of all, writing gives me the satisfaction that I am doing something for me (and giving something to others) through my creativity. It's been a spur jingling journey so far and I can't wait for what comes next!

Could In The Reins be a Horse Movie?

Are you crazy about cowboy love story movies and horses? If so, you'll definitely want to get to know Cowboy McKennon Kelly! Join the herd and meet him in the book trailer from this cowboy romance novel for horse lovers. Just might curl toes in cowgirl boots!
