In this 22nd Equestrian Author Spotlight, I talk with equine author Alyssa Knee. Of course, we discuss the best topics on earth ... writing, books and horses! In the interview, you'll learn about Lordosis and why she writes about how effects the horses who have it. Plus, she shares her favorite horse movie. I think you'll agree it's a solid choice! Happy reading! About Alyssa Knee, Equine AuthorAlyssa Knee is an author and avid equestrian who lives in the Hunter Valley, NSW (Australia). She grew up in a small country town in north-west NSW called Lightning Ridge, and is a country girl at heart. It was here, as a child, that she discovered her love of all things horses and once she caught the bug she never looked back! Her passion for all things equine led her to chronicle the life story of her Lordotic horse, Spike. Alyssa shares what life as the owner of a horse with a rare congenital condition is really like. Alyssa has written for and been published in Australian Performance Horse Magazine. Hoofbeats Australia, HorseWyse Magazine, Horse Network, and Horse Nation. Nice to meet you, Alyssa! Time to saddle up for the interview. What is your favorite horse movie? The Horse Whisperer. What advice can you share that might help aspiring authors? To not get bogged down with editing. Focus on getting the story our first and then do your revisions once you’ve got something down. The first draft doesn’t have to be perfect but editing as you write can do more harm than good (my many unfinished drafts can attest to that!) What is the best part about being an author?Being able to share a story that has some impact on the reader. Spike is based on a true story about Spike’s life and shares some intimate details about his life and our experiences and I hope that it not only educates the reader but also inspires them. What do you think makes your book stand out from the crowd?I don’t think there is, or will ever be another book like it because it’s about Spike’s life and our unique experiences. What was your favorite chapter to write and why?The first chapter was by far my favourite to write. It tells the story of how Spike came to be in my life and the story of the day that he came home. From that chapter the reader will learn how I came to be his owner, how I very nearly wasn’t and why I think (and how I knew) he was a special, one of a kind horse. It’s the story of one of my most favourite memories and the place our entire journey began and I always look back on it with fond memories so to be able to share that is very special. Is there a message in your book that you hope readers will grasp?I hope readers will finish the book having learnt about Lordosis and how it effects the horses who have it. I hope that they will go away knowing that horses with Lordosis can make excellent ridden partners and that with the right care and some love and dedication that there isn’t much they can’t do. What’s next? Future goals for your writing?I would love to write an equestrian related fictional novel.
