In this 24th Equestrian Author Spotlight, I talk with fellow author Dove Winters. Of course, we discuss the best topics on earth — writing, books and horses! In the interview, you'll learn what her favorite horse book is (hint ... it's a classic), as well as, what she thinks is the most difficult thing about being an author. Don't worry though she shares the best part about being a writer, too. Happy reading! About Dove Winters & her horse books!![]() Dove Winters is a young adult fantasy author from Nebraska. Her works include the Knight Heir Series and the trilogy Ember of the Planet (she also wrote the Shadows Breathe Horse Book Trilogy under the name Kathleen Marentes.) When not writing, she's usually thinking about writing, or spending time with her husband and four kids. Nice to meet you, Dove! Let's gallop into the interview. What is your involvement with horses?Horses have been a passion of mine since before I can remember! My bedroom was always full of them. I started taking riding lessons at ten years old. At fourteen, I started doing volunteer work at the ranch to pay for my lessons and I did that until I was 18, when I started working there full-time. It was a ranch with Saddlebred show horses and I was a groom and handled all the breeding matters. Unfortunately, I had to quit when I was 20, since I was having my first child and my husband, also from the ranch, switched jobs and we moved. But horses are still all over my house! What's your favorite horse book (besides your own of course)?I’d have to say Black Beauty. I love that it’s told from the horse’s point of view. I also love how well it shows all the good and bad horses face in their lives. I experienced a lot of both working at the ranch and sometimes it’s heartbreaking. But in the end he receives a good life. My dad gave me a pocket-sized version of Black Beauty when I was a kid and I love it! What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time before you published your first book?Don’t be in such a rush! I was so excited to get my book out there that I published a book full of typos. One typo was on the dedication page of all things! And it had a horrible cover that still haunts me. Take your time! Make sure you put out a professional work that represents your passion in a way you can be proud. What is the hardest part about being an author?Finding time to write! The urge to write is so strong, I’d be happy to sit in a chair all day long every day and just write! But I can’t do that. What is the best part about being an author?I spend my days in make-believe worlds getting to do things I’ll never be able to do in real life! If this book is part of a series, would you share little about it?The Shadows Breathe is about Kara Springs, a horse trainer from Nebraska. A new trainer comes to her ranch and she quickly discovers he is not what he seems. When he threatens to end the life of a mare that had the courage to take a stand against him, Kara steals the mare to save her life. The resulting journey changes the course of Kara’s life forever. The second book, The Shadows Fall, has Kara again stealing horses, this time while also fighting for her life and those she loves when a threat from the first book comes back into her life. The Shadows Revive delves deeper into Kara’s past as she confronts a man who knew her parents. The books are a trilogy right now, but I hesitate to say that’s where it will end. But for right now, it will stick with three books. What was your favorite chapter to write and why?So many to choose from! I think my favorite chapter is from the first book when main horse Lea takes her stand against the trainer that’s hurting her. The events surrounding that happening were taken from real life. It’s a training technique used in ranches and I watched in silent horror as this poor horse had its legs knocked out from under it and was forced to the ground over and over again. Horses value their legs; I can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been. So Lea had to endure the training in the book, but she doesn’t take it lying down! What’s next? Future goals for your writing?I have another series, under the name Dove Winters, called the Knight Heir series. Although not centered around horses, there are horses in the books. The book I’m currently working on is the first of a new trilogy that I’m really excited about, but it’s too early to say much about it, except that there will be special horses in it! As I mentioned above, I now write under the name Dove Winters, so be sure to follow me for updates on new books or any new stories from the Shadows Breathe series!
